My name is Steve Anstee, and I am honoured to have recently been elected as the group leader of the Conservatives in the Borough of Rochdale. It is a privilege to follow Councillor John Taylor, who served with dedication and passion for the past two years.
His shoes are big ones to fill, but I am committed to continuing his legacy. I am grateful that Councillor Ashley Dearnley has agreed to be my deputy.
His extensive experience, having led our group for over 20 years, will be invaluable to me and to the residents we serve. I live in Heywood with my wife, our two children aged 14 and 2, and our two dogs. Professionally, I have worked for a bank for the past 17 years, managing change projects.
My political journey began in 2014 in Trafford, and I was elected to represent the residents of Bamford Ward in Rochdale in 2021. Local government has long been the Cinderella of politics, with often low voter turnout.
However, the impact we have on people’s lives and communities locally often leaves a greater legacy than anything from Westminster. I am dedicated to serving our communities with integrity and collaboration to achieve the best outcomes for everyone.
Despite our Conservative group being relatively small with nine members, we are the main opposition to the Labour group in the Town Hall. While we do not believe in opposition for its own sake, we will always hold the council accountable when our community’s interests are not being adequately served.
I believe there is room for improvement at the council, and as the opposition, it’s important we highlight these areas positively and constructively.
Locally, Councillor Shakil Ahmed was sworn in as the new mayor of Rochdale borough during a ceremony at Rochdale Town Hall. The event, attended by over 300 people, celebrated Shakil’s dedication to local charities and his long service.
The evening featured performances by Rochdale Music Service and Bhangracise Dhol drummers. Councillor Janet Emsley was named deputy mayor, with Ken Emsley as consort.
I hope this has been a useful introduction to me and I look forward to updating you on the progress we are making locally in my next column.
Until next time,
Steve
