Labour have broken their promise to British farmers with the Family Farm Tax.
Plans announced by the new Labour Government would see inheritance tax of 20% applied to all family farms over £1m, a move that will devastate small family farms across the UK and here in Rochdale borough. Labour’s Family Farm Tax will stop farms being passed to the next generation:
- Threatening our food security
- Risking jobs
- Leading to food prices rising
Rochdale Conservative Shadow Portfolio Holder for Communities and Cooperation, Cllr. Peter Winkler said "Rochdale is a semi-rural area and home to many family farms, the likes of which will be directly affects by Labours Family Farm Tax. Valuations of £1m upwards are not uncommon in farming, but that does not mean that the operators of these farms are wealthy. Often these farms are run by generational farming families who work year to year and struggle with weather, pests, yields and other variable that make farming a difficult and volatile livelihood."
"Moreover, these farmers are the people who support the food infrastructure and supply chains that we all rely on, from milk to bread, meat and vegetables, it is our British Farmers who put the food on our supermarket shelves and we believe that we should be supporting them, not taxing away their homes and businesses."
