Norden’s Conservative Councillors are delighted to report that the historic mill chimney at Black Pits has been saved and restored so that this local landmark can be enjoyed by generations to come.
The chimney, which is one of the last remaining mill chimneys in Norden, has been the subject of an ongoing battle with developers who, after having agreed to carry out restoration works as part of the housing development at the old Dexine site, had stalled the project.
Councillor Peter Winkler said: “Lots of local people have expressed their concern that this local landmark could be lost if work to restore it were not completed in a timely manner. I am delighted that, through our continued commitment and ongoing discussions with the planning officers and the developers, work has now been completed to restore damaged brickwork and remove vegetation from the structure.”
Cap stones which sat at the top of the chimney had to be removed following a survey by steeplejacks, which advised that these were too damaged to be repaired but councillors were pleased that only a limited amount of brickwork had to be removed before a new cap could be installed.
