Councillor Winkler encourages residents to join forces with environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy to tackle litter during the Great British Spring Clean 2024
Norden Ward Councillor, Peter Winkler has backed a bid to clean up litter from streets and public spaces during Britain’s favourite environmental charity’s annual campaign.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean, which runs from 15-31 March, is calling everyone in Rochdale to show their pride in their community by taking part in the mass-action litter-pick.
Peter is delighted to lend his support to back the charity’s #BigBagChallenge – a plea to the public to pledge on the charity’s website to pick one bag or more of litter from streets, parks, beauty spots and beaches in order to protect our vibrant communities and precious wildlife habitats.
This year’s campaign comes as Keep Britain Tidy marks its platinum anniversary, having been founded by the Women’s Institute in 1954.
The charity reports that last year:
- 84% of participants agreed they felt inspired by the campaign to do more to protect the environment.
- 77% agreed it brings communities together
Peter is active throughout the year having collected hundreds of bags during his regular litter picks and clean up sessions and is always keen to encourage others to get involved too. He said: “This is a great opportunity for anyone who has never been involved before to get out and give it a go. It's really easy to get involved and you don't have to go far to make a real difference. I do a lot of my litter picking whilst walking with our dogs, but it is something that you can do any time, any place. So, if you have a spare hour, why not join the challenge? It could be on your walk home from school, in your lunch hour or at the weekend with the kids.”
The Great British Spring Clean, now in its ninth year, brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to make a difference to the environment on our doorstep.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, said: “The Great British Spring Clean simply would not be possible without the backing of our local authority partners and councillors and we are so grateful for the ongoing support from Councillor Winkler and residents in his ward.
“The Great British Spring Clean is a fantastic way for people to really show their pride in where they live and connect with like-minded neighbours, while taking serious and immediate action to protect the environment on their doorstep. During this year’s campaign, we are highlighting that the environment belongs to everyone, and that everyone is welcome to join in with our activities and 70th anniversary celebrations. Whether it’s a pledge to pick one bag - or 70 for our anniversary - these acts of kindness will make the country a cleaner, safer place for future generations”.
