As autumn unfolds, I’m pleased to highlight some positive developments in our borough.
One remarkable project is the ongoing restoration of Queen’s Park Bridge and the recreation of historic lighting columns. Originally installed in the 1930s, these columns fell victim to rust and weather damage. They have now been meticulously restored using original remnants, featuring gold leaf-painted lion motifs and ornate brackets. This restoration will enhance the bridge's elegance when completed in spring 2025.
In a positive step for sustainability, residents can now recycle a wider range of plastics, including pots, tubs, and trays. This change has been made possible by upgrades to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority's facilities and a renewed contract with SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK.
The Ignite Fire Festival returns from November 22 to 24, featuring stunning fire and light displays in the gardens opposite Rochdale Town Hall. The event will culminate in the Christmas lights switch-on by Father Christmas and Mayor Councillor Shakil Ahmed on November 24 at 5:30 PM. Attendees can enjoy live performances, interactive installations, and seasonal refreshments from 4 PM to 8 PM.
In the Council Chamber, we recently debated a motion regarding the winter fuel allowance. While I supported the original motion, submitted jointly by my party and the Liberal Democrats, urging the council to write to the Chancellor to reverse her decision, I was concerned about an amendment that diluted its urgency. The winter fuel allowance is vital for many families, especially the elderly, and we must continue to advocate strongly for our residents impacted by this decision.
Additionally, we have a by-election in North Middleton ward at the end of this month, and I encourage all residents to cast their votes when the time comes.
