Secretary of State Sajid Javid visited Deeplish Community Centre to support Councillor Jane Howard in her bid to become Rochdale’s MP.
Mr Javid said: “It was great to join the fantastic Conservative candidate for Rochdale, Councillor Jane Howard, at Deeplish Community Centre and thank the community volunteers.”
Councillor Howard said: “It went really well. It was great to have Sajid here and Deeplish is a great little community centre. They were actually having a health open day with lots of organisations, so it’s great that Sajid saw that.
“We had a nice tour and spoke to a few people and then had a question and answer session from the community, covering topics about the Chancellor, affordable housing, which we have committed to over the next few years, and brown field sites, and concerns about Palestine."
“We need an influential member to put their views forward and we need a Conservative MP. We need change, we need Rochdale right up there and people seem very supportive."
“I’m not going to disappear afterwards, Rochdale is my home and I’m passionate about it. I’m fed up of it being knocked back all time. People work hard in the borough and I want to tell people all the good things going on.”
Councillor Jim Gartside said: “It went very well, they met lots of people and stressed that the Conservatives are right for Rochdale as Labour haven’t delivered."
“He left a good impression on me and I’m pleased he took the trouble to come and visit. Sajid used to live close to Deeplish and he enjoys coming back to Rochdale."
“Jane is the strongest voice for Rochdale as she lives here and has been involved for many years.”
