The Rochdale Conservative Group scored a massive win in the debate surrounding the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework draft proposal this evening as Councillor Peter Winkler put Labour Group and Council Leader, Richard Farnell on the spot in the Council chamber.
Councillor Winker challenged the Leader to explain how he would ensure that the 70% of brownfield development sites identified in the plan, would be used before the 30% of highly attractive development sites on controversial greenfield / greenbelt sites.
Councillor Farnell gave a somewhat indirect response but was then picked up by Councillor Winkler when he said: “Whilst I agree with you Comments about this being a once in a lifetime opportunity for our borough I don’t think that you have really answered the question. What you did say however was the three words that we will all hold you to as this plan progresses – 'Brownfield Sites First'. I am sure that I will not be the only one now looking forward to seeing all the brownfield sites being fully developed before a single foundation is considered to be dug into our precious greenbelt.”
